History on Fathers Day Essay
History of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day Festival as seen today is not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work and struggle of Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington that just as we have set aside Motherââ¬â¢s Day to honor mothers we have a day to acknowledge the important role played by the father. However, some scholars opine that Fatherââ¬â¢s Day history is much older than we actually believe it to be. They say that the custom of honoring dadââ¬â¢s on a special day is over 4,000 years old. There are a few more claims about the Fatherââ¬â¢s Day origin about which we will learn in this page. Earliest History of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day Scholars believe that the origin of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. Rather they claim that the tradition of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Fatherââ¬â¢s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. Though there is no record of what happened to Elmesu and his father but the tradition of celebrating Fatherââ¬â¢s Day remained in several countries all over the world. History of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day in US Modern version of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day celebration originated in United States of America and thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes thanks to Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Fatherââ¬â¢s Day saw the light of the day. The idea of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day celebration originated in Sonoraââ¬â¢s mind when she per chance listened to Motherââ¬â¢s Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered if there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonoraââ¬â¢s mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care. Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvisââ¬â¢s struggle to promote Motherââ¬â¢s Day, Ms Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Fatherââ¬â¢s Day in US. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Menââ¬â¢s Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonoraââ¬â¢s cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first Fatherââ¬â¢s Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained gradual popularity all over US and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across the country. Looking at the heightened popularity of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day in US, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Fatherââ¬â¢s Day in 1924 to, ââ¬Å"establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligationsâ⬠. After a protracted struggle of over four decades, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Fatherââ¬â¢s Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored for her contribution at the Worldââ¬â¢s Fair in Spokane in 1974. Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96. Other Theories of Fathers Day Origin There are several theories behind the origination of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day. Some believe that the first Fathers Day church service was held in West Virginia in 1908. Others opine that the ceremony was first held in Vancouver, Washington. The president of Lionsââ¬â¢ Club, Chicago, Harry Meek is said to have celebrated the first Fatherââ¬â¢s Day with his organization in 1915 to stress on the need to honor fathers. He selected third Sunday in June for celebration, the closest date to Meekââ¬â¢s own birthday. In appreciation for Meekââ¬â¢s work, the Lions Clubs of America presented him with a gold watch, with the inscription ââ¬Å"Originator of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day,â⬠on his birthday, June 20, 1920. Some historians honor Mrs. Charles Clayton of West Virginia, as the Founder of Fatherââ¬â¢s Day. In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote Congress that, ââ¬Å"Either we honor both our parents, mother and father, or let us desist from honoring either one. But to single out just one of our two parents and omit the other is the most grievous insult imaginable.â⬠In countries where Catholic Church holds greater influence Fatherââ¬â¢s Day is celebrated on St. Josephââ¬â¢s Day (March 19). Present Day Celebrations Fatherââ¬â¢s Day Festival has gained amazing popularity over the years. The festival is considered to be a secular one and is celebrated not just in US but in a large number of countries around the world including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Norway and India though on different dates. World over people take Fatherââ¬â¢s Day as an opportunity to thank father and pay tribute to them. On this day children present Fatherââ¬â¢s Day cards not just to their dads but also grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers or any other person who commands the position of a father in their life. There is also a trend to present Fatherââ¬â¢s Day gift to dad, most popular of all being necktie. Other popular gift being roses, the official Fatherââ¬â¢s Day flower. Many people rue that the trend of presenting gifts to fathers has led to over commercialization of the festival relegating the noble idea behind Fatherââ¬â¢s Day celebration.

Re Companies at Fault or Is It the Lack of Personal Responsibility?
Are Companies At Fault? Or Is It The lack Of Personal Responsibility? How does one become fat? Is it the lack of responsibility of one's actions to make healthy food choices, the lack of knowledge to know if something is healthy or unhealthy for your body, or television hypnotizing the viewer into buying an unhealthy product? According to surgeon general, obesity has become a health epidemic that needs to be controlled and prevented. Almost a third of America's population is obese and growing. Obesity is also now a wide spread topic that has caught the attention of journalists and health activists.Writers all over America have an opinion on the obesity epidemic such as Radley Balko who wrote the article ââ¬Å"What You Eat Is Your Business. â⬠Is obesity a medical condition or a consequence of a person's food choice? In Balko's article, he argues that the government is attempting to control what Americans consume and that obesity is caused by poor food choices. He tells us that the government is removing junk food and sodas from school vending machines, wanting more labeling (such as warning labels), and restricting food marketing to children. In other words, bringing government between your waist lineâ⬠(158). Balko speaks the government is fighting obesity the wrong way by removal of the vending machine snacks, taxing more on higher calorie foods, and having restaurants send their food creations into a nutritional lab to be tested. He thinks the right way to defeat and handle obesity is to give the people a choice to want to be obese or improve your physical self. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ Government ought to be working to foster a sense of responsibility in and ownership of one's own health and well-beingâ⬠(158).Balko tells us that ââ¬Å"the best way to alleviate the obesity public health crisis is to remove obesity from the realm of public healthâ⬠(159). Balko thinks that Americans need to be able to choose healthy on their own without the gover nment's interference. If America is educated about food health, the better choice can be made. It is up to the individual to choose a salad or a home cooked meal over a Big Mac. People are smart enough to know what to put into their bodies. Another writer who wrote about obesity is John H. Banzhaf who's article is opposite of Balko's views.Banzhaf, the man who wields the law as a weapon against fast food companies. Banzhaf wants congress to figure out a solution for the obesity crisis and he is disappointed that congress is supporting a bill that gives fast food companies immunity from all liability. he does not think that obesity is caused by the lack of personal responsibility, he explains that the ââ¬Å"rise of obesity and obesity related diseases occurred largely within the past 15-20 years, and there is no evidence that there has been a corresponding drop in and/or parental responsibilityâ⬠(163).He thinks that if law suits against tobacco companies are effective, he can have the same effectiveness against the fast food industry. According to Banzhaf, fast food industries should be held liable for its key role in the ascension of obesity. His thoughts on what congress should do to help go against obesity before thinking about giving fast food industries immunity is to ââ¬Å"A. have the fast food industries display information about calories and fat in their menusâ⬠¦ , B. e required that all fast food restaurants provide appropriate warning about the danger of eating fattening foods too often, C. require that all fast food restaurants provide more nutritious alternative menuâ⬠¦ , and require that all food item intended for children ââ¬â provide fat and calorie contentâ⬠¦ â⬠(165-166). Banzhaf's article disagrees with Balko's argument because Banzhaf points most of the blame for obesity toward fast food and is arguing that it is not lack of responsibility, but the lack of nutritional knowledge and availability of healthy food.He wants the FFR to be liable for the contribution in the obesity epidemic and for not well informing their customers properly about the content of their food. Yves Engler would agree with Banzhaf with his article ââ¬Å"Obesity: Much of the Responsibility Lies with Corporations. â⬠Engler begins with his article with statistics of why obesity s now a large health crisis such as claiming that almost a third of the U. S. population obese and that the rate of obesity has doubled within 13 years. He found link through researchers that obesity is connected to 30 other medical conditions and he learned that the epidemic is costing billions of dollars to treat obesity related conditions, and people are putting more faith into weight loss drugs and surgery, rather than naturally losing weight through exercise. He has discovered that FFR are more available in walking distance from a home than supermarkets. ââ¬Å"Poor areas often have had an even higher exposure to FFR and fewer super mark etsâ⬠¦ â⬠(174). In Englers studies, fast food products are consumed in greater quantities (175).The amount food you receive has increased into bigger portions and according to angler people consume 30 percent more since 1983. Companies spend billions of dollars to advertise their products and their main target are children. Engler says that animated characters and toy gain the attention of children, thus making the children have their parents come in and eat at the restaurant. ââ¬Å"Companies use cartoon characters, toys, and other items to have powerful influence over childrenâ⬠(175). The soda companies invaded schools to gain profit children.Engler's argument is that companies are relentless in selling their unhealthy products and succeeding in their sales. With the company's success leads to an obese America. Engler can connect with Balko's article because children/teenagers/adults need to take responsibility in their food and drink choices and consume in moderat ion of the unhealthy choices. Engler also connects well with Banzhaf because Banzhaf is going against the FFR, the same as Engler is and that fast food is a key factor for the cause of obesity.Cathy Arnst has a different view on the subject on is obesity caused by a lack pr personal responsibility or is it the food we eat. Cathy Arnst does not think that obesity is caused by our lack or personal responsibility in what we eat. She emphasizes that the foods we eat have more calories than what they used to be in the past. ââ¬Å"Two new studies conclude that the food industry is following the tobacco industryââ¬â¢s play book to ensure that we keep loading up on calories, and as a result virtually all of the weight gain in the U. S. ver the last 30 years can be attributed to eating more, not moving lessâ⬠(01). She say that having no physical activity plays no role in why we have an obesity epidemic. People today just eat more than what we used to in the past. Cathy can relate t o Banzhaf and Engler because the problem is the food thatââ¬â¢s available. So like what Banzhaf was saying, there should be an alternative healthy menu. Finally, who really is at fault for causing the obesity epidemic? All writers have made good points on why this happened and good ideas of actions we should make.People are at fault for the food choices they eat and corporations are at fault for selling high calorie foods that cause fat tissue to grow. Also corporation irresponsibility for targeting children mainly for buying their products through their advertisements because they are teaching a generation to buy unhealthy foods and saying itââ¬â¢s ok. If this Epidemic is to ever be solved, instead of pointing what is causing it, make choices as an individual to make the next day healthier for yourself because every adult is responsible for their own well being.

(Character) and relationship to society Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
(Character) and relationship to society - Essay Example What is it? It is the protagonistââ¬â¢s attempt to pretend to be treated as a white woman, although she belongs to another nation. It should be mentioned that both Helga (Quicksand) and Clare (Passing) are Mulattos, who are unhappy because the community they live in do not like all ââ¬Å"not-whites.â⬠Both the stories under consideration introduce two women who are eager to navigate their way through ideological, economic and social structures of their communities. It is important to add that Passing and Quicksand not only document the long and continuing dynamic of race in the United States of America; they also describe all the challenges of being ââ¬Å"not-white.â⬠The women described by the author have to struggle for their happiness. Unfortunately, they do not manage to succeed in the fight for their rights. For example, Clare mysteriously dies after her secrete of being black becomes known to her husband. Helga turns into a poor woman who brings up her children a nd is not satisfied with her miserable life. We cannot ignore the fact that only the society is to blame in this situation. Both Helga and Clare found no opportunity to realize themselves and their dreams in their community. Racial discrimination and improper attitude towards black people left no place to recognition and sympathy needed by Mulatto women (p. 11).

Pursuing Public Safety.A Loose Fish in the Sea of Criminal Justice Term Paper
Pursuing Public Safety.A Loose Fish in the Sea of Criminal Justice - Term Paper Example The states have enforced or applied the principles of incapacitation and rehabilitation as ways to ensure public safety. Recidivism is defined as ââ¬Å"a tendency to slip back into a previous criminal behavior patternâ⬠such as the return to prison or a new sentence for a new offense (Beck, n.d.) The principle behind incapacitation follows that a person who is imprisoned will not perpetrate a crime. Imprisonment and capital punishment are the major ways to compel incapacitation which will prevent a person to commit a crime. Rehabilitation, on the other hand, is non-punitive and believes that a person can be prohibited to commit a crime by helping him to solve his issues that led him to commit a crime. This principle considers that each person is defective and commission of a crime is not the personââ¬â¢s purpose but may be a result of other physical, emotional, sociological factors (Renter, 2008). The paper talks about how the government should focus on determining the strat egies that will actually lessen the recidivism. According to Gomez (2008), although there are lots of theories on how to reduce recidivism and ensure public safety, resorting to incapacitation has not been very helpful to achieve these goals. This is because the government and the criminal justice system has devoted its resources and focus on isolating the lawbreakers and not on how to treat the criminal behaviour of the offenders. The treating of behaviour of the criminal offenders is more important than just merely imprisoning them. Thus, according to the Gomez (2008), it is better to make sure those who are capable of earning an honest living be allowed and encourage doing so. During the time the study of Gomez (2008) was still ongoing, Minnesota is suffering the highest unemployment rate in seventeen years thus the government thought that it should be the time to address the reality and let this offender work without sacrificing the public safety of the people. Aside from being able to give a chance for the offenders to earn and support their family and earn an honest living, they can help Minnesota on solving issues on impaired bridges, highways, dams, plants and water systems (Gomez, 2008). This is something like ââ¬Å"hitting two birds with one stone.â⬠The offenders are more likely not going to commit crime again because of the employment opportunity given to them. If this is the case, recidivism issue is addressed and community problems are solved without sacrificing public safety. Another Look at That Loose Fish But certainly, this approach will not always be giving us the positive effects. If there should be a reason why we should not try to reduce recidivism among the state and federal prisoners by teaching them to build houses and highways that would not otherwise be built is because of the fact that there will be a number of prisoners that will just run-off and leave the responsibilities. Another reason is that it is going to be unfair for the public because as we know, there is a high unemployment rate, meaning there are still a lot of people in the community who are unemployed and are not given an opportunity to get a job because these jobs are given to the offenders or felons. Billions of dollars are spent by the government to incarcerate felons to train and at least some of them so they can re-enter the free world more capable of

Development of a New Snack Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Development of a New Snack - Case Study Example This puts pressure on the manufacturers of children's snack products to rethink their advertising and marketing strategies for this market group, and it also alters the process of product development by introducing new factors into their external environment analysis. The British Medical Association (2005) has also expressed its concern with regards to the increasing levels of childhood obesity in the country, which are a result of poor nutrition and exercise. Snacks probably of concern to the BMA as well as a result of their advertising and marketing which is targeted at children. This is supported by research conducted by the BMA (2005), the EU and the University of Strathclyde which demonstrated that marketing is influential in the decisions made to purchase particular foods. Another finding of this research was that children were not able to assess the nutritional quality of foods advertised to them, which further supported the actions of other European countries who have taken a step further by prohibiting advertising aimed at children (BMA 2005). The systematic review conducted by the University of Strathclyde highlighted that food advertising to children in the UK was higher, the food advertised was less healthy and that food promotion was affecting children's preferences, behaviour and consumption (BMA 2005). This brief summary of the UK highlights the potential prob... ing public pressure and regulation is bound to affect the external environmental analyses that are undertaken, which will adversely affect profits and revenue. To further understand the potential risks faced by children's snack product developers, it is necessary to undertake a brief analysis of the external environment in this industry. 2.0 The External Environment Analysis The external environment analysis is important for organisations as product development is often influenced by the needs of the consumer and the ability of the organisation to meet the consumers' needs (Brassington and Stephen 2005). In other words, the external environmental analysis prioritises the most important influences in the product market. For organisation involved in the production of snacks for children, the external environmental analysis is even more important, as their target market is one which does earn income, which means that the focus is then placed on those able to purchase the products, such as the parents. This analysis also defines the scope for the organisation, with which they can influence the needs of children by targeting their parents and other channels which children are often exposed to. Therefore it would follow that parents and marketing channels will prove to be the most influential in meeting their goals. However, recent consumer and government pres sure is forcing children's snack producers to re-evaluate their external environment analysis. As the analysis will focus on external influences, the most appropriate tool is the PEST analysis which stands for Political, Economic, Social and Technology (Sullivan and Adcock 2002). 3.0 Children's Snack Product Market In the UK advertising snack products to children has fallen by approximately 15%, which

Processed Food Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Processed Food - Essay Example In addition to this, their taste is almost always consistent. If we look at the process of manufacturing processed food, it can be divided into three basic processes. First is the raw material processing, which brings out the food in the form that is eaten. This is followed by packaging and finally transportation or logistics. Even though it sounds harmless, the process of manufacturing ready to eat meals has negative affects not only on the health of the consumers, but also on the environment. In the following essay, the use and production procedure of hamburger would be analyzed. The essay will show how producing a hamburger is accompanied by various processes which prove to be detrimental to the environment. Cheese is one of the condiments which always accompany a hamburger. Hardly any hamburger is eaten without cheese in it. Hilmar Cheese, a cheese production factory from California, has been in the business for over 20 years. As a result of its manufacturing process, the company has been constantly polluting both land and water. Approximately 2.5 million gallons of wastewater is discharged by the company every day. This water contains poisonous compounds like arsenic, barium compounds, nitrogen and other salts. Such elements are fatal to humans and animals. In addition to this, waste water from factories and production plants leads to two very serious types of pollutions, namely Barium pollution and arsenic pollution. The next component of a hamburger to be analyzed is the hamburger bun. These buns are made from wheat. With resources like land being limited, the same piece of land is irrigated repeatedly and its nutrition is exhausted. Over farming eventually leads to desertification.
